Basic Email Troubleshooting Step
Here are some basic email troubleshooting steps:

1. Make sure that there is an Internet connection. This can be done by power cycling the modem and PC at least once.

2. Check all email client settings: Username, Password, Incoming email server (mail.domain name.net), and Outgoing email server (mail.domain name.net).

3. Check online at the email web server to make sure the account can be accessed through the web server directly.

4. Temporarily disable any anti-virus or firewall protection. It could be set too high to let email traffic through. The settings for the program will need to be checked if that is the case.

Protecting your computer
Computers connected to the Internet are vulnerable to worms, viruses, spyware, and hacker attacks. Carefully monitor the programs installed on computers connected to the Internet. Many adware, spyware, and virus programs are installed by the users or their family members. To protect the computers connected to the Internet, we strongly recommend the use of a firewall and virus protection. There are many free and commercial programs that provide anti-virus, spyware, and firewall protection.

Computers using the Windows XP or Vista operating systems have a free firewall program as part of their security features. An antivirus program such as AVG will still be needed to protect the computer from viruses. Users should also make sure that software updates for their computer are set to run either automatically or at regularly scheduled periods. Microsoft and Apple regularly release security patches for their software.

Troubleshooting Tip: Easy Modem Power Cycle
If you can't connect to the Internet, power cycle your cable modem. To power cycle the cable modem and restore connectivity, follow the directions below:

1. The coaxial cable must be plugged securely into the modem and the wall outlet.

2. Unplug the cable modem from the wall. Leave the modem unplugged for two minutes.

3. Plug the cable modem directly into the wall outlet. Wait five minutes for the modem lights to cycle.

4. The lights on the modem should be steady. Open your Internet browser and try to visit web sites. If still unable to visit sites, continue to the next step.

5. Shut down the computer and turn off the power.

6. Turn on the computer. Try to surf again. If you are still having trouble, search our site for your cable modem's instructions. The lights and labeling on the cable modem will differ depending upon the type of modem.read more

Social Networking and Child Safety
Monitor your children’s use of the Internet; keep your Internet computer in an open, common room of the house.

Use the Internet with your children. Be open to learning about the technology so you can keep up with them.

Talk to your kids about their online habits. Educate yourself about the site.

Tell your children why it’s so important not to disclose personal information online. Tell them why it’s important to keep information like their name, Social Security number, address, phone number, and family financial information like bank or credit card numbers to themselves. Remind them that they should not share that information about other family members or about their friends either.  Learn more
